the problem
Many children experience mental health challenges daily, with those who are hospitalized or affected by specific illnesses being particularly vulnerable. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that globally, one in seven (14%) of 10-19-year-olds face mental health challenges. In the U.S., this issue is especially concerning for hospitalized children. According to an article published by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), mental health conditions such as anxiety, ADHD, and depression affect at least one in 10 U.S. children hospitalized for a medical condition or surgical procedure (Doupnik, 2023).

In this day in age, the youth face serious mental health challenges. They experience a disconnection from their families, face fears about medical procedures, and endure disruptions to their daily routines. The hospital environment, marked by clinical sterility and the smell of antiseptics, can be daunting. Patients experience not only physical pain but also anxiety about their health, which can lead to feelings of isolation. Beyond hospital environments, young people face their challenges. They deal with the constant pressure of social media, the expectation to excel in school, and significant worries about society. The tendency to withdraw from social interactions increases the risk of developing mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety, ultimately complicating the recovery process.
